Chiropractic care is rooted in the relationship between the body’s structure and its functional effects on health. Our spine acts as the primary support for our bodily structure and protects the spinal cord, which connects our peripheral nervous system to our brain.

Spinal manipulation, also known as spinal manipulative therapy, combines the manual adjustment of joints throughout the body, massage, exercise, and physical therapy. Designed to relieve pressure, and improve nerve function while reducing inflammation in the neck, shoulder, and back, and also addresses headache pain. Chiropractors commonly use it to treat other disorders such as sinus problems and menstrual pain.

When enhanced with a massage or therapeutic exercises, spinal manipulation can effectively correct an injury and restore the body’s optimal function. Chiropractic care offers long-term relief, focusing on protecting and enhancing the communication pathways of the spinal cord and nerve roots, thus safely managing pain and a range of conditions, without the need for prescription drugs.

Chiropractic care offers a holistic approach to long term wellness through advanced chiropractic treatment programs. Chiropractors often suggest other rehabilitative exercises and soft tissue therapies, as well as dietary and lifestyle modifications.

History of Chiropractic

The name ‘chiropractic’ is derived from two Greek words, cheir (meaning ‘hand’) and praktos (meaning ‘done’), as in ‘done by hand.’ Daniel David Palmer chose the name when he developed the practice in 1895.

D.D. Palmer learned that although various forms of manipulation had been used for possibly thousands of years, it had not been developed as a scientific or philosophical rationale to explain the effects. Palmer rationalized the science and philosophy of chiropractic as a result of his extensive study of anatomy and physiology. His theories assert that altered nerve flow was the cause of all disease and that misaligned spinal vertebrae had an effect on nerve flow.  He believed that by restoring the vertebrae to their proper alignment, it would restore health.

In 1897 the Palmer School of Cure was established, known today as the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.  All 50 states in the US plus Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia officially recognize chiropractic as a health care profession.  More than 70,000 active chiropractic licenses exist in the United States alone.

Testimonials

I injured my shoulder playing volleyball years ago and had some impingement under my shoulder blade, and limited range of motion. The chiropractor knocked out my impingement in one session and I haven’t felt this limber since I was in my twenties!

Recovery time from chiropractic care involves the healing or relief from the issue being treated. In general, chiropractic adjustments should not cause adverse effects to recover from. How quickly will I see results from chiropractic procedures?

Depending on the extent of the issue, chiropractic care helps patients feel noticeably better shortly after receiving treatment. This usually happens within 1 to 4 weeks from starting chiropractic therapy. Some patients have noticed relief after a single adjustment. However, for more complex musculoskeletal conditions, results may take longer.

How long will my results from chiropractic procedures last?

Adjustments can last for weeks or months, depending on several important factors such as your age, activity, and fitness level. It also depends on the injury type, your lifestyle modifications, and the adjustment technique applied by your practitioner. It’s estimated that more than 60% of chiropractic patients start getting relief after their first session because they opt to make lifestyle modifications.
